Class Tutorial

Start drawing the phone screen

To draw the screen I start by laying down the lightest tonal value over the entire screen.

I then gradually work in the darker shading towards the back.

To do this as quick as possible I go over the headphone logo on the screen, then erase it back out again every so often to ensure I don’t lose it.

Drawing the bevel side of the phone

The sides of the phone are beveled so the bevel gets a different tonal value to show the angle change.

To separate the screen from the body add a dark line to indicate the difference in height.

Drawing the shadow of head phone cord

Now lets add the shadow cast by the head phone heads.

Look carefully and you will notice that these shadows have hard edges at the side of the phone and soft edges towards the center.

This is a great example of how a shadow fades lighter further away from the object.

To show the bottom simply outline it.

Drawing detail of the top of the phone

Here at the base of the phone we have quite a few details to draw.

Start with the darkest darks then carefully shade in the bevel and curved sides.  Notice the super thin line left around the charging plug.

To give the phone height draw in it’s cast shadow start off dark against the phone then fade lighter.

Drawing head phone heads

The head phone heads are round like a tube so each one will gradually fade darker towards each edge.

The bottom edge darker to show the light is from the top.

As you can see there is quite a lot of shading going on here to show all the wound up cord so take your time in this area.

To get a looking in effect on the right hand head make the inside darker than the outside.

For the metal bits draw in the dark areas then lift out the reflections with your eraser.

The rest of the head is drawn in the same way so I wont show it all.

Drawing head set ear piece

Lets rather move on to drawing the ear pieces.

Shade the part going into your ear is the same as you did the wire.

For the plastic part you have to look very carefully to get the angles of the shading correct otherwise it’s shape will look wrong.

You want nice gradual shadings in this area to make it look smooth.

Lift out any reflections using a pen shaped eraser.

Drawing shadows of ear piece

Now work in the cast shadows of the earphones and the heads

Dark against the object fading softer away from it.
