I would recommend working on a canvas Zayn. The reason for this is that the weave of the canvas gives the texture paste / gel something to grip onto. If your surface it too smooth that is when the peeling can happen, for example if you have to apply the texture to a sheet of glass, the texture has nothing to grip onto and that is when you end up with peeling problems.
That and when adding water / acrylic based texture gel / paste onto oil paint. Water based items do not adhere to oil based surfaces.
